The Math Behind Plastic EPR Targets
Calculating your Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) target for plastic packaging is no longer a simple flat percentage. Under the updated CPCB framework for 2026, it requires analyzing your historical placement data and applying specific category-based formulas.
### Understanding the Categories
The CPCB divides plastic packaging into four categories:
### The Baseline Calculation
For **Producers (P)** and **Brand Owners (BO)**, the base EPR target is calculated as:
*EPR Target = (Average weight of plastic packaging placed on the market in the last two financial years) + (Average weight of pre-consumer plastic waste generated)*
For **Importers (I)**:
*EPR Target = Average weight of plastic packaging imported (including packaging of imported products) in the last two financial years*
### Minimum Recycled Content Mandates
By 2026, PIBOs must not only collect and recycle equivalent weights, but also ensure a mandatory percentage of recycled plastic is used in their new packaging.
### Why Use an Expert?
Miscalculating your baseline can lead to purchasing too few certificates (resulting in penalties) or too many (resulting in wasted capital). 3E Concepts utilizes proprietary tools to audit your sales data and calculate your exact, optimized EPR obligation.
