Are You a PIBO?
"PIBO" is the most important acronym in India's waste management legislation. It stands for **Producer, Importer, and Brand Owner**. Determining which category your business falls into is the critical first step for EPR compliance.
### 1. The Producer
A Producer is any entity engaged in the manufacture of plastic packaging, electrical and electronic equipment, or batteries.
*Example: A company that manufactures plastic bottles or lithium-ion cells.*
### 2. The Importer
An Importer is a person who imports products or packaging. Crucially, this applies even if you import finished goods that happen to be wrapped in plastic.
*Example: A retail company importing electronic toys from China. They are liable for both the E-Waste EPR (for the toy) and Plastic EPR (for the packaging).*
### 3. The Brand Owner
A Brand Owner is any person or company who sells any commodity under a registered brand label.
*Example: A fast-food chain that sells burgers in branded wrappers. Even though they didn't manufacture the paper or plastic wrapper, they are the Brand Owner and hold the EPR liability.*
